Voigtlander Nokton 28mm f/1.5 Coming to Nikon Z-Mount

cc: Cosina

Cosina has announced that the Voigtlander Nokton 28mm f/1.5 is coming to Nikon Z-mount, following its December debut for Sony E-mount. The E-mount version launches this month, while the Z-mount ships in February 2025.

The lens features 10 elements in 8 groups, including aspherical and partial dispersion glass, for sharp, distortion-free images. Its f/1.5 aperture with a 12-bladed diaphragm produces smooth, circular bokeh. The lens is manual-focus only but includes electronic contacts for EXIF data, focus peaking, and stabilization support.

With a close focus of 28 cm and high-quality metal construction, it combines precision and performance. Pricing is likely around $750, similar to the E-mount version.

Another New Photographer Phone?

cc: Honor

The Honor Magic 7 Pro has officially launched in Europe, bringing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and a standout 200-megapixel 3x periscopic telephoto camera. First released in China late last year, it’s now available in the UK and Europe, though a U.S. release remains unlikely.

The phone’s camera setup is impressive, featuring a 50-megapixel main camera with a variable f/1.4-2 aperture, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and the headline-grabbing 200-megapixel telephoto camera with a 3x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom supported by AI enhancements. AI also powers features like portrait enhancements and a new Deepfake Detection tool for spotting fake video calls.

The Phone is priced at £1,100 in the UK and €1,300 in Europe.

Weekly Photo Technique Exploration

Welcome to a new section of the magazine where every week we will explore a new photography technique from across various photography genres.

This week’s technique: Panning for Motion Blur in Action Photography

What’s Panning?

Panning involves following a moving subject with your camera during the exposure. The result? Your subject stays sharp, while the background becomes a smooth blur that conveys motion.

How to Do It

Pick the Right Gear:

  • Any camera will do, but a lens with a bit of zoom (like a 70-200mm) makes it easier to track your subject.

  • Use a monopod for extra stability if you’re shooting for a while.

Set Your Camera Settings:

  • Shutter Speed: Start with 1/30 to 1/60 of a second. Adjust depending on the speed of your subject—faster subjects need a quicker shutter (like 1/100), slower ones can go longer (1/15).

  • Aperture: Use a mid-range aperture (like f/8) for a balanced depth of field.

  • ISO: Keep it low, around 100-400, since you’re not aiming for night shots here.

Position Yourself:

  • Stand where your subject will pass directly in front of you. This makes it easier to track them in a straight line.

  • Leave enough room to follow through with your motion after the subject passes.

Track Your Subject:

  • Focus on your subject as they approach. Use continuous autofocus (AI Servo or AF-C mode) to keep them sharp.

  • Start moving your camera along with them before pressing the shutter. The key is smooth, steady motion that matches their speed.

Shoot in Burst Mode:

  • Fire off several shots in a row as you pan. This increases your chances of nailing the perfect motion blur.

Why It’s Cool

  • Adds Energy: Your photos feel dynamic and alive, capturing the intensity of the moment.

  • Creative Blur: Instead of freezing motion, you create an artistic, dreamy effect.

  • Works Anywhere: From sports fields to busy streets, panning turns ordinary scenes into action-packed shots.
