Canon’s Upcoming VCM Zoom Lens

credits: Canon

A new rumour suggests Canon may be preparing a notable update to its L-series zoom lineup, specifically around autofocus technology. According to multiple sources, the company is working on a high-end L-series zoom lens that would use Voice Coil Motor (VCM) autofocus. If this turns out to be true, it would be a first for Canon, since VCM has so far only appeared in a handful of recent RF prime lenses, not in zooms.

VCM autofocus is designed for speed and smoothness, with the added bonus of being extremely quiet. Up to now, most L-series zooms have relied on ring-type USM motors, which are great for normal photos but not always ideal for smooth focus pulls on video. STM motors help in that regard, but they can feel a bit sluggish. Bringing VCM into a zoom lens would suggest that Canon is trying to better balance photo and video performance, rather than clearly favouring one over the other.

As for what this mystery lens actually is, details are still pretty vague. The rumour points to a wide-angle zoom arriving as early as March 2026, but there is no word yet on focal length or aperture. Some speculation mentions a possible RF 24–70mm f/2.8L IS VCM, though that is far from confirmed. There is also talk of a second L-series lens launching around the same time. With CP+ happening in late February, we may not have to wait long to learn more.

Godox’s New V1mid Flash

credits: Godox

Godox has introduced the V1mid, a new round-head on-camera flash that sits between its basic speedlights and the higher-end V1 models. The idea here is to keep the round-head design and wireless system people like, but shrink the body and simplify things a bit for photographers who want portability.

Technically, the V1mid sticks closely to the rest of the V-series. The round flash head is designed to give more even light spread than a traditional rectangular speedlight, with smoother falloff and fewer hot spots. It is compatible with Godox’s AK-R1 magnetic modifiers, so gels, grids, and diffusers can be snapped on quickly, and with the optional S3 bracket it can drive Bowens-mount modifiers. Power comes from a 7.2V 2200mAh lithium-ion battery rated for roughly 650 full-power shots, with recycle times down to about 1.7 seconds. Charging is handled over USB-C.

Feature-wise, the V1mid supports TTL, manual, and multi modes, along with high-speed sync up to 1/8000s and both first- and second-curtain sync. Output ranges from 1/256 to full power, with thermal management stepping in during heavy use. It also includes Godox’s 2.4GHz X wireless system for multi-flash setups, plus a 2-inch touchscreen and a small LED modeling light for previewing placement. Versions are available for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and OM System, with some features varying slightly by mount. Pricing is at $179.
