Fujifilm’s New Instax mini 41

credits: Fujifilm

Fujifilm very recently dropped the new Instax mini 41, a follow-up to the popular mini 40, and it comes with a few thoughtful upgrades. The big one? A better close-up mode with parallax correction, so your detail shots are more centered and less guesswork. It still has the built-in selfie mirror, but now it actually adjusts what you see in the frame.

Design-wise, it’s still rocking that retro vibe, but with a softer, more modern twist — think a textured body for better grip, orange accents, and a subtle metallic-like finish. Definitely feels more current without losing that Instax charm. It’s still super beginner-friendly, with auto exposure that adjusts settings on its own, so you can just point and shoot. The mini 41 works with all the usual Instax mini film, including the ones with monochrome looks.

It’ll be out by the end of the month, but no word yet on pricing — probably waiting to see how tariffs shake out. If it’s anything like the mini 40, expect it to land around the $100 mark.

Nikon Zf Gets Big Firmware Update

credits: Nikon

Nikon announced a major firmware update — version 2.00 — for the retro-styled Zf, and it’s a big one. First up, the Zf now works with Nikon Imaging Cloud. That means your photos can auto-upload to the cloud, firmware can update itself, and you can even download custom “Imaging Recipes” — basically presets inspired by your favourite creators. You can load up to nine at a time straight onto the camera.

Bird lovers will appreciate the new dedicated "Birds" subject detection mode, which improves autofocus accuracy, especially against tricky or cluttered backgrounds. There’s also a cool new Hi-Res Zoom feature for video shooters — it lets you digitally zoom up to 2x in Full HD with no resolution loss, and you can pick from 11 zoom speeds.

Manual focus users get some love too: the max magnification in live view has doubled to 400%, and you can now half-press the shutter to exit zoomed-in view. Plus, you can now assign exposure comp and ISO to the dials in manual mode, and even add aperture info to EXIF when shooting with old-school lenses.

Photo Analysis

Welcome to a new addition to the magazine: the photo analysis, where I will analyse a photo and talk about the composition, lighting what’s positive, what’s negative etc. so that you can learn and better your own photography from it ;)

Let’s Analyse this Image:

Composition

What works well:

  • The symmetry is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. The walkway, the railings, the repeating poles and streetlights—it all draws your eyes straight to that person walking in the middle.

  • The person being dead-centre adds to the mystery and drama. It feels cinematic, like the opening scene of a thriller where you just know something’s about to happen. Or like the cover of a horror movie almost.

  • The train on the left side breaks the symmetry just enough to make it interesting, without pulling you too far off balance.

  • That big building in the background adds great depth and scale.

What could be better:

  • The person is placed perfectly, but maybe just a tiny bit more space in front of them would’ve helped with that feeling of moving ‘‘into’’ the frame rather than being boxed in.

Lighting

What works well:

  • The lighting is just moody perfection. That overhead spotlight hitting the figure is great - your eyes are immediately at the subject.

  • The warm lights on the bridge contrast really nicely with the cool, bluish tones of the background. It’s subtle, but it makes the whole image feel layered and atmospheric.

What could be better:

  • The train could maybe pop a bit more—it’s such an iconic shape, and just a touch more light or contrast there would help balance the left side better.

  • Some of the details in the dark areas are lost, especially around the person’s lower half. Not a huge issue since it adds to the silhouette effect, but lifting the shadows just a bit could still work without ruining the mood. Hard call to make.

Framing & Perspective

What works well:

  • The eye-level perspective puts you right into the scene. It feels like you’re the one walking behind the person, which makes it way more immersive.

  • The depth is incredible. Those repeating light posts, the converging lines and the railings just keep pulling you deeper into the frame.

What could be better:

  • A slightly lower angle could’ve made the person look even more imposing or mysterious. Right now they blend into the scene a bit—cool, but maybe missing a bit of punch.

  • The slogan on the left building ‘‘Blue’’ bothers me personally. I would have maybe edited it out. (pulls your eyes away too much once you notice it)

Storytelling

What works well:

  • It feels like there’s a story here, however it’s totally open to interpretation. Is the person going home? Wandering the city after hours? You can project anything onto them.

  • The empty walkway adds to the sense of isolation. Makes it feel very peaceful.

  • The train on the left feels symbolic somehow—like time is passing, or life is moving on in the background while this person is stuck in their own world.

What could be better:

  • It might’ve been interesting to have just a hint of facial expression or gesture from the subject—but then again, the mystery is kind of the whole point.

  • The scene is already cinematic, but maybe a bit of movement blur or light trails could’ve added a touch more dynamism—depends on the mood you're going for, though.
