Viltrox’s AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro For Nikon Z

credits: Viltrox

Viltrox’s AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro for Nikon Z-mount is here. This new lens is built around a 15-element, 11-group optical design and covers a 46.6-degree angle of view on full-frame. It has an f/1.4 to f/16 aperture range and uses an 11-blade diaphragm, which should help maintain a relatively round aperture shape when stopped down. Physically, it is not a small lens. It measures 84.5mm in diameter and 113mm in length, and weighs about 830 grams without caps or hood.

Autofocus is handled by Viltrox’s Dual HyperVCM system. The company describes it as quiet and responsive, and the lens supports full-time manual override. It uses an internal focusing mechanism, so the overall length does not change during focusing. Minimum focus distance is 0.45 meters (around 1.5 feet), delivering a maximum magnification of 0.145x. Viltrox also claims reduced focus breathing, which should make the lens more practical for video work, especially for people who want consistent framing during focus pulls.

The barrel is constructed from metal and includes weather sealing, positioning it as a more ‘robust’ option within Viltrox’s lineup. Coatings include nano and resistance layers designed to reduce flare and improve contrast in challenging light, and you will find a 77mm filter thread up front. The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro for Nikon Z is priced at $700.

PolarPro’s New Lens Filter

credits: PolarPro

PolarPro has released a filter that is designed to mimic the classic look of Kodak Portra 400 film. Instead of relying on presets or colour grading later, this filter alters your shot optically at the moment of capture. It combines a subtle warm tint, a light white mist diffusion layer (roughly comparable to a 1/4 strength diffusion filter), and a built-in chroma polariser.

What makes it a bit more interesting than a standard warming or mist filter is that chroma polariser element. It is meant to control certain reflections and glare (like on skin, glass) without the heavy sky darkening you sometimes get from a strong circular polariser. The diffusion effect is fairly restrained, so you are not getting dramatic halation, just a softer highlight roll-off and a more muted overall contrast. In practical terms, that means less punch and more of the flatter, organic rendering Portra is known for.

The filter comes in standard screw-in sizes from 49mm up to 82mm, plus coarse-thread 86mm and 95mm options. There is also a version for PolarPro’s Helix MagLock system, which uses a magnetic twist-lock mount. Pricing runs from $89.99 to $129.99 for the threaded versions, while the Helix version is listed at $249.99.
