A Classic Vintage Lens Is Coming Back

credits: Light Lens Lab

Light Lens Lab is bringing back a classic vintage lens. After over a year of development, the company is getting ready to release a modern remake of the super rare P. Angenieux Type S21 50mm f/1.5, a lens that originally came out in 1953. The new version, called the 50mm f/1.5 “Z21,” will officially launch on May 21, 2025.

The original S21 was famous for its dreamy rendering and fast f/1.5 aperture, making it a go-to for low light, portraits, and even fast-action shooting back in the day. It was built for Exakta and M42 mounts, and when it does show up at auctions now, it goes for serious money, like $7,000 or more, even in rough shape.

This new Z21 remake keeps the soul of the original but adds a few modern upgrades. It’s built from aluminum alloy, uses Lanthanide-infused elements for better image quality, and supports frame coverage up to 44x33mm. There’s also a redesigned rangefinder mechanism with tighter tolerances, so it should focus more accurately than the original. We’ll get full specs, pricing, and shipping details when the lens officially drops on May 21.

Synology Announces Hard Drive Restrictions

credits: Synology

Synology (a well known storage company) just made a move that’s riling up photographers and creatives. Starting with their new 25 Plus NAS series, they’re pushing users toward using only Synology-approved hard drives. You can technically still use third-party drives, but you’ll lose out on major features like drive health monitoring, firmware updates, and deduplication.

This isn’t completely new for Synology’s enterprise gear, but bringing it to consumer-level systems feels like a big shift—and not everyone is happy about. Their argument is reliability: certified drives are less prone to failure and offer a smoother user experience. Which is probably true, but here’s the kicker: those “Synology drives”? They’re just rebranded Seagate and Toshiba ones.

That has got people calling it a cash grab, and many are switching to QNAP or other alternatives out of frustration. To be fair, older Synology NAS systems aren’t affected, and you can migrate your current drives to the new series. There’s also a way for third-party drives to get certified, but it’s a whole process most users won’t want to deal with.
