The FilmNeverDie’s Nana Controversy

cc: FilmNeverDie

FilmNeverDie recently launched its hyped Nana 35mm film camera worldwide, but within a week controversy started. Critics have raised two key issues: whether the company broke Kickstarter rules and if the camera is truly original.

Some accused FilmNeverDie of backing its own campaign to hit funding goals, which Kickstarter forbids. However, founder Gary Wong clarified that only three employees backed the project with their own money, and Kickstarter reviewed and cleared it. Since the campaign proceeded, the accusation seems unfounded.

The second issue is that the Nana resembles the MF301, a low-cost Chinese camera. FilmNeverDie admitted they used existing parts and manufacturing but made upgrades, including a metal body and a glass lens instead of plastic. While the MF301 costs $30 wholesale, the Nana’s $230 price reflects these improvements. FilmNeverDie says the goal was to refine the design, not start from scratch, leaving it up to buyers to decide if the price is worth it.

Canon’s new Patent

cc: Canon

Canon might finally be filling the gaps in its telephoto lens lineup. While their recent cameras like the EOS R6 Mark II and EOS R5 Mark II have been impressive, affordable telephoto options have been lacking. Currently, photographers either have to spend big on Canon’s exotic lenses or make do with slower options like a 500mm f/7.1.

A new patent (2024-163673) suggests Canon is working on mid-range telephoto lenses, which could be a game-changer. The patent lists models including a 400mm f/4.0, 500mm f/5.6, 600mm f/5.6, 600mm f/6.3, and 800mm f/6.3. These specs seem to take some inspiration from Nikon’s mirrorless telephoto lineup, which isn’t a bad thing given Nikon’s strong options in this range. If Canon delivers, photographers could finally get more practical and affordable choices for their telephoto needs.

Nikon’s Heralbony Cameras rumoured to go Worldwide?

cc: Nikon

I while ago Nikon added some colour to the Zfc with a limited edition designed in partnership with Heralbony, a Japanese agency supporting neurodiverse artists. These cameras were previously only available in Japan but are now coming to the U.S., with rumors they might go worldwide soon.

The collection features four bold designs by artists Masaharu Honda, Masahiro Fukui, Teppei Kasahara, and Momoko Eguchi. While the outside is all-new, the inside is the same retro-styled, modern-performing APS-C camera, paired with a Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm lens.

At $1,200, it’s $100 more than the standard model and will be available in late December through the Nikon Store (US only). It’s a fun way to support neurodiverse artists while adding some flair to your gear.
