Viltrox’s Tiny $94 Lens Now Available for Fujifilm X

cc: Viltrox

Viltrox is bringing its ultra-compact 28mm f/4.5 “Chip” lens to Fujifilm X cameras after launching it for Sony E-mount last year. Despite the move, it keeps its full-frame optical design, which should deliver solid performance on APS-C sensors. On Fujifilm cameras, it gives a 42mm equivalent field of view instead of 28mm.

This thing is tiny—just 60 grams (2.1 oz) and 15.25mm (0.6 inches) long, making it barely bigger than a body cap. In fact, it doubles as one, with a slide switch to go from “cap” to shooting mode. Despite its fixed f/4.5 aperture, Viltrox says it delivers sharp images with nice starburst effects. Plus, it has autofocus with a quiet voice-coil motor. It’s available now for $94 directly from Viltrox.

A Leica Camera Grip for Your iPhone?

cc: Leica

Leica just launched the Leica Lux Grip, a MagSafe camera grip for iPhones that gives you real buttons and dials, making mobile photography feel more like using a classic Leica.

It connects via Bluetooth and has a proper shutter button, a control dial, and two customizable buttons for zoom, shutter speed, or exposure. There’s also a tripod mount and a built-in battery good for 1,000 shots (charges via USB-C).

To celebrate 100 years of Leica’s first 35mm camera, the Leica Lux app now has a new 50mm lens simulation and a retro black & white film preset with optional grain. The app costs $6.99/month or $69.99/year, if you get the $329 Lux Grip, you get a free year.

This time in Review: The Laowa 15mm f/5

cc: Laowa

The Laowa 15mm f/5 Cookie is an ultra-wide pancake lens designed for photographers who want a lightweight and portable option without sacrificing image quality. Weighing just 4.9 ounces (158g) and measuring only 15.25mm (0.6 inches) in length, it’s one of the most compact full-frame wide-angle lenses available. Its small size makes it ideal for travel, street, and architectural photography, though handling may be a challenge for those with larger hands.

Build and Design

Despite its compact size, the lens is well-constructed with a mix of metal and plastic components. The engraved focus distance scale and metal lens mount contribute to a solid build, while a rubber gasket around the mount provides some weather resistance. The manual focus ring is functional, but its small size may take some getting used to. The lens is available in Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, L-Mount, and Leica M mounts, with auto aperture control for Sony and Nikon users.

Image Quality and Performance

For an ultra-wide lens at this price point ($399), the Laowa 15mm f/5 delivers good overall image quality. Some softness is noticeable at wider apertures, but the lens performs well for its class. Flare control is impressive, even when shooting into direct light sources, and the lens produces well-defined starbursts at f/16 and f/22.

Distortion is present, as expected for a 15mm lens that is not part of Laowa’s “zero distortion” series. Photographers shooting architecture or interiors may need to correct perspective in post-processing.

Conclusion

The Laowa 15mm f/5 Cookie is a strong option for photographers looking for a compact, budget-friendly ultra-wide lens.
