Artizlab’s $489 Classic 35mm f/1.4 Lens

cc: Funleader

Funleader and Artizlab have joined forces to create the Artizlab Classic 35mm f/1.4 lens for Leica M mount. Inspired by Leica’s iconic 35mm f/1.4 V2, this lens offers a similar vintage aesthetic and performance for just $489, compared to the thousands you’d pay for a Leica original.

Designed by a team of Leica enthusiasts, the lens delivers dreamy bokeh at f/1.4, strong resolution, and improved coatings to cut down on flare, while maintaining the classic “Leica look.” It’s compact, lightweight, and crafted from aluminum and copper, making it a perfect match for Leica rangefinders.

The lens is available now at the discounted price of $489, but it’ll eventually retail for $539. If you’ve been eyeing a Leica lens without the Leica price, this could be it.

Weekly Photo Technique Exploration

Welcome to a new section of the magazine where every week we will explore a new photography technique from across various photography genres.

This week’s technique: Light Painting

What’s Light Painting?

Light painting involves using a handheld light source (like a flashlight, LED, or sparkler) to "paint" light into your scene during a long exposure. The result? Glowing trails, illuminated objects, and dramatic highlights.

How to Light Paint

Find a Dark Location:

  • Go somewhere dark—light pollution will ruin the effect.

  • This works great outdoors at night or even in a pitch-black room.

Set Up Your Camera:

  • Use a tripod to keep your camera steady during long exposures.

  • Switch to manual mode and dial in these settings as a starting point:

    • Shutter Speed: 10–30 seconds (long enough to paint with light).

    • Aperture: f/8 to f/11 for a wide depth of field.

    • ISO: 100-200 for minimal noise.

Choose Your Light Source:

  • Flashlights, glow sticks, steel wool (for sparks), or even your phone screen can work.

  • Colored gels over lights can add creative effects.

Start the Exposure:

  • Press the shutter and move your light source around the scene. You can "draw" shapes, illuminate objects, or create streaks of light.

  • Stay out of the light path if you don’t want to appear in the shot.

Experiment:

  • Try different motions: sweeping, spiraling, writing letters, or tracing outlines of objects.

  • Adjust your light’s brightness or use multiple light sources for layering effects.

Why It’s Awesome

  • Creative Freedom: There are no rules—every shot is unique.

  • Adds Energy to Your Photos: Even static objects look dynamic when paired with light trails.

  • Great for Beginners: You don’t need fancy gear; a simple flashlight and some imagination will do.
